Weight loss in a teenager – Is it Lupus?

I was contacted today by one of the regional paediatricians about an adolescent girl with rapid weight loss of 8kg over 3-4 weeks. Although the blood count was reported as normal, Antinuclear Antibody test (ANA) was reported as positive (1:640) which raised the suspicion of lupus.

lupus-rash-teenage girlOn closer questioning, the involved patient did not have any other symptoms of connective tissue disorder and as such, consideration to other possible diagnoses; e.g. occult lymphoma, needed to be duly given.
